
Unravel the unknown and put your creativity to the test in the Drakensberg Fibre Festival Mystery Skein Competition 2026.
Organised by the Drakensberg Fibre Festival, sponsored by Stucken Wool Mill, and in collaboration with Knotty Habit, this much-anticipated competition invites fibre artists of all skill levels to transform one mystery skein into something truly extraordinary.
If you love a creative challenge, a surprise colourway, and the excitement of seeing your work exhibited alongside fellow makers, this competition is for you.
Each participant will receive a 100g mystery-dyed skein of South African merino wool.
The colour remains a secret until you open your box.
From there, the creative journey is entirely yours.
β’ You may add up to 500g of yarn of your own choice
β’ Maximum total yarn allowance: 600g
β’ The full 100g mystery skein must be used in your final piece
Knit, crochet, weave, or explore any other handcraft technique. Embellishments such as embroidery, beading, and decorative details are welcome.
β’ Open to all skill levels
β’ Limited to 50 participants
β’ 49 places available (one box met an unfortunate end thanks to a very determined cat)
R300 per entry
Your entry includes:
β’ One 100g mystery skein of 100% merino wool
β’ A box of surprise goodies from participating sponsors
β’ Entry into the competition
β’ Exhibition of your completed work at the Drakensberg Fibre Festival
β’ Entry to the exhibition
Please note: postage is not included.
Materials
β’ Mystery skein: 100g of 100% merino wool
β’ Additional yarn: up to 500g (any fibre, colour, or texture)
β’ The mystery skein must be fully incorporated into the final piece
Techniques
β’ Knitting
β’ Crochet
β’ Weaving
β’ Any other handcraft technique
Embellishments such as embroidery or beading are encouraged.
All items must be entirely hand-made. Machine work is not permitted.
All projects must be completed by 31 July 2026.
